About Diploma in Barbering

Skills Growth Academy offers the Diploma in Barbering at its East London centre, located just a stone's throw away from Tower Bridge. ​


The Level 3 Diploma in Barbering is a substantial vocational qualification which gives you the opportunity to enhance your career in barbering. From doing this course and achieving your VTCT Level 3 it will enable you to work in salons, department stores, cruise ships, training establishments and mobile.

This qualification is based on National Occupational Standards (NOS). It is recognised by the UK's lead hairdressing professional association (The Hairdressing Council) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a barber.


The Barbering course is also the preliminary stage before enrolling onto our Hairdressing course. Therefore in order to enrol for the Diploma in Hairdressing Level 3 course, you will have to complete this Barbering course to gain eligibility via our training academy. Otherwise, learners will require a Level 2 qualification in Hairdressing prior to undertaking the Level 3 qualification in Hairdressing.


Please note:- It's mandatory to either hold a Level 2 qualification in Hairdressing, or hold a Level 3 qualification in Barbering before applying for the Level 3 in Hairdressing.

Who is it for?

This course is for individuals who are looking to enhance their career within the barbering industry.


Units include:

The course is comprised of 10 mandatory units which cover the necessary practical and theoretical skills to provide a wide range of techniques and styles.

  • Promote additional services and products to clients

  • Design and create a range of facial hair shapes

  • Creatively cut hair using a combination of barbering techniques

  • Provide hair consultation services

  • Design and create patterns in hair

  • Colour and lighten men’s hair


Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for Level 3 Barbering are:


  • Must be aged 19 or over


After completing this course, you can progress into work. It enables you to work in salons, department stores, cruise ships, training establishments and mobile.

Assessment Methods

During this course you will be assessed through various assessments, multiple choice theory exams, evidence portfolio and workbooks. Also, a 90% attendance is required to pass the course due to the intensity and course length.


The course is delivered through a combination of classroom based teaching and online teaching / independent study. There are 10 units within the course. Full-day classroom teaching begins at the start of the units and online teaching/independent study is recommended to be carried out for 8-10 hours a week.

The Level 2 Barbering qualification is embedded on this course, and we can combine level 2 with level 3.



Learners will be required to maintain a portfolio of work which evidences what they have covered and learnt during this course. This portfolio will be internally assessed.



This course is delivered at our Tower Bridge Centre with attendance for classes being required one day a week, 10:00 - 16:00. 

Our expert course tutor will guide you through the course and our centre is equipped with everything you need to be able to complete assignments and undertake independent study, including computers and laptops.
